More Details:
William Smith plays Captain Luther Staggers who has had his Gatlin gun stolen. With the war over, he appears to be some kind of mercenary. He pursues the same four men as Caine - who is wanting to return a lost Chalice also stolen by them. When Caine and the Captain meet up, they clash, but the Captain, impressed with Caine's fighting ability, tries to recruit him for a job in Mexico. With Caine's refusal to join, it finally escalates into a death match between the two. Caine appears to be travelling south, as this episode takes place near the border, and the next couple of episodes take place in Mexico.

Interesting quotes:
"The universe contains a certain pebble called the earth and many men have formed an attachment to it no less foolish than your own." - Master Kan, on hearing Caine say he had formed an attachment to the pebble he had so long wanted to snatch from his hand.

"I do not wish to die. Nor to see others die needlessly." - Caine

The episode ends with these words:
That we are possessed by what we would possess:

Held in bondage to Earth and vested things by the attachments we form for them... even so holy a thing as a chalice, so slight a thing as a pebble.

Cast notes:

  The veggiedude comment...
veggiedude.jpgIt is said that bad guy William Smith originally wanted the part of Kwai Chang Caine. He's never hunted, and has joked he "might even have been a vegetarian if he hadn't been raised in cattle country."
