More Details:
Caine visits a federal prison to talk to someone named Huntoon who knows of his half-brother, but he is identified by the warden, and becomes an inmate. Caine and Huntoon break out, and Caine has to domesticate the wild animal in Huntoon.

The Huntoon character is similar in nature to Steinbesk's Lenny in 'Of Mice and Men', only here he is more savage and wild.

Interesting quotes:
"Do not see yourself as the center of the universe wise and good and beautiful. Seek rather wisdom, goodness and beauty that you may honor them everywhere." - Master Kan to young Caine

"If you plant rice, rice will grow. If you plant fear, fear will grow." - Caine

"Where is evil? In the rat whose nature it is to steal the grain. Or in the cat, whose nature it is to kill the rat?" - Master Po

"The rat steals. Yet, for him, the cat is evil." - Caine

"And to the cat, the rat." - Master Po

"Yet, Master, surely one of them is evil." - Caine

"The rat does not steal, the cat does not murder. Rain falls, the stream flows, a hill remains. Each acts according to its nature." - Master Po

"Then is there no evil for men? Each man tells himself that what he does is good, at least for himself." - Caine

"A man may tell himself many things but is a man's universe made up only of himself?" - Master Po

Cast notes:

  The veggiedude comment...
veggiedude.jpgHuntoon complains after the jail break that he needs meat, but Caine shows him how to live as he does, by pulling up roots from the ground, eating wild berries and other natural things from their surroundings.

"You sure act like a injun... how'd you find out about this stuff" - Huntoon
"I listened" - Caine

This education shows Huntoon that killing and eating animals is unnecessary, and in one scene Huntoon is seen befriending a wild young deer and becoming its friend. Caine approaches and jokes "I thought you said you needed meat?"

The wild and savage Huntoon is a gentle vegetarian by the end of the episode. Instead of choosing to be at home in a new town where no one knows of his past, he chooses to dwell in the countryside to help out the wild animals who live there, to which Caine says with delight, "When a man finds his way, heaven is gentle."

Your rating system seems so bizarre to me. "Chains" gets 5 stars and "The Ancient Warrior" only gets three? Even more incredible is that "An Eye for An Eye" gets only two!?!

I give the pilot film and the first four episodes solid gives. From there on the quality slips a bit. However, "The Ancient Warrior" will always hold a special place for me.
